Fashion on film

The last few years fashion has become more important in movies, especially documentaries about famous fashion designers are upcoming. Loic Prigent, French movie director and journalist, directed a few of the best documentaries. Signé Chanel, the ultimate Chanel documentary a must-see for any Chanel fan and Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton. Following Marc ‘on diet’ Jacobs from show to show, the documentary is a go-see for anyone who holds even the slightest interest in Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs or fashion in general. You learn about what drives Jacobs, the process of designing a Louis Vuitton collection and the business of fashion in general.

And then of course there is the documentary about my fashion bible, The September Issue, about a Vogue issue weighed nearly five pounds, the single largest issue of a magazine ever published. The film tells the story of legendary Vogue editor in chief and my personal hero Anna Wintour and her larger-than-life team of editors creating the issue and ruling the world of fashion. A quote: journalist to Anna, many people say that you are an 'Ice Woman'... Anna’s answer, this week it has been very cold that's all I can say. All the documentaries are a movie an sich, but then without the ‘we have to put some romance in it’ aspect.

Pretty new are the movies especially made for the internet. Some of them made by famous directors as Baz Luhrmann, David Lynch, Ridley Scott and Martin Scorsese for brands such as Gucci, Prada, Chanel and Dior. For Dior David Lynch made a rather mysterious movie called Lady Blue regarding a Dior bag and a sad Marion Cotillard. Brands need to understand the opportunities technology gives to them - from an ad to an emotion, everybody wants a small piece of the dream. In the beginning no one believed in these kind of movies, but nowadays and from an art kind of view this genre needs to be taken seriously … with an wink ;-)
